Analytical psychology, founded by Sigmund Freud, who discovered the personal unconscious, experienced great development thanks to Carl Jung, who also called it depth psychology. Jung went on to theorize the concept of the collective unconscious, a universal psychic container within which archetypes are present, that is, primordial images common to all humanity, to all peoples, regardless of the type of culture, which also manifest themselves in the physical, social, linguistic, and aesthetic dimensions in the form of symbols.

Carl Jung defined the fundamental collective archetypes as the Self, the Shadow (the instinctive and irrational part of each individual, also containing repressed thoughts and complexes), the Anima, that is, the feminine part unconsciously present in every man, and the Animus, the masculine component in women, the Sage, the Magician, the Warrior, the Sovereign, etc.

The latest development of archetypal analytical psychology came with James Hillman, who carried out a great revolution by applying psychology not only to the strictly clinical field but extending its scope to the arts, culture, and the history of the West.

It is precisely through archetypes and through the technique of amplification that one is able to understand, not without a profound intrapsychic reflection, why the patient suffers. The awareness of the cause of inner discomfort, the identification, in short, of the archetype that needs to be listened to, are the necessary conditions to achieve inner well-being. It is the archetype itself, therefore, that indicates the path to follow, that leads to overcoming the problem: "in identifying the archetype [...] the primary objective is to deal with psychic discomfort in a global way, which starts, as Jung's analytical method wants, from the investigation, with active listening, of the patient's psychic approach to their own existence, through the plot and the psychological narrative as an expression of the reality of the soul." Giving space to the patient's images, listening to their stories and fantasies, suspending any judgment, means entering their psyche, because the image is a product of the psyche that always has its archetypal root and when "it takes possession of the psyche, it stands as a unilateral reality"[]. The image, that is, has the power to destroy us or to contribute to our rebirth: it is up to us to choose whether to take the path of discomfort or to achieve a psychic balance that leads us to a harmonious existence.

“AT THIS POINT, IT BECOMES EXTRAORDINARILY EASY TO UNDERSTAND OUR LIFE: HOWEVER WE ARE, WE COULD NOT BE OTHERWISE. NO REGRETS, NO WRONG PATHS, NO REAL MISTAKES. THE EYE OF NECESSITY REVEALS THAT WHAT WE DO IS ONLY WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN”
